The difference between an application that is good now and one that is still good in 5 years time is "Application Architecture".

As developers we are all very excited about coding and seeing what bells and whistles we can add to our latest creations. This zeal is even more apparent with ad-hoc developers who have taken to developing applications in addition to their main roles because they have had a real need for solutions to make them more effective and therefore add more business value.
